What You Don’t Know About Accountability Could Be Hurting You

Brad Smith • May 22, 2019
I know your type…

You’re just like me. You have good intentions, and you want to change your habits. You want to create positive change for yourself.

BUT… even though you have good intentions… you tend to procrastinate or don’t finish what you start. You end up disappointed, and you feel guilty.

Hey, it happens to many of us… even me sometimes.

That’s why I’m going to share with you how to change the game so that the odds are in your favor.

If you want to break through your barriers…

…accountability is the secret!

Breaking through requires a commitment. You have to be accountable to yourself. You are probably saying to yourself, “Well… I haven’t been able to stay committed in the past.”

I get it.

Let me ask you this. Have you ever considered working with an accountability group?

If you are serious about making changes, building new habits, and breaking through your barriers… what better way than to have accountability and support?

Before you start getting anxious… let me share with you the top 7 reasons that accountability groups work.
#1 Under Observation Performance Improves

Think about this. When your boss is nearby, do you tend to stay focused on your work or get distracted by texting? What about when you were a student. Did you work more diligently when your teacher stood next to you? Have you ever had a personal trainer or workout partner? Did you give more effort because you were being observed?

The likely answer is YES… being observed creates improved performance.

Personal responsibility for your commitment is important, but an accountability group is what will assist you to accelerate your results.
#2 Follow Through Increases

Do you love deadlines? Did you say NO? If you did, it’s likely because you procrastinate and wait to the last minute to do the work. Without a deadline, there is no immediacy for the project to finish.

Now, think about a time when you completed a big project. Maybe you cleaned out the garage. OR you finished your taxes just in time.  How did it feel to complete the task?

A relief… right? You may have felt proud of yourself too.

The truth is you secretly like deadlines. A deadline lays out a beginning and the end.  Without a deadline, there is no clear picture for a timeline of completion. Plus, deadlines set expectations.

In an accountability group, the purpose is for you to be accountable for your goals, deadlines, and productivity. Follow through is another name for being accountable. So if you want to finish what you start, the members help you stay true to your commitment.
#3 Learn From The Challenges, Successes, and Failures Of Others

If you see someone slip on the ice as they walk across the parking lot, would you take caution as you follow? Or would you find a different path to your car? Of course, you would. You learned from the first person’s challenge in getting to his car. It works the same way in an accountability group.

Mistakes and failures are how we learn. You can speed up the learning process when you don’t have to go through everything first hand. Not that I wish anyone harm, but I’d rather walk around the ice.

What if you saw someone swerve to avoid a pothole in the road? Would you stay in the same lane and pray you don’t blow out a tire? Or would you safely move into the other lane? I don’t know about you, but I would follow his lead and learn from his challenges.

Learning from others is a shortcut to reaching your goals. It’s up to you if you want to take the long road.
#4 Keeps You Grounded When The Going Gets Tough

There are ups and downs in everyone’s life. That’s a given. But how do you respond when the going gets tough?

If you tend to melt down… well, an accountability group can help you melt up.

An accountability group is also a support group. The members may be able to see what you can’t. They may have experience and insight to provide a solution… or a course of action you haven’t considered.

If you tend to sink into worry or fly off the handle when things don’t go your way…

…the accountability group members can help. They can assist you to ground yourself so that you can produce your way through the challenge.
#5 Someone To Challenge You To Keep Going

There’s going to come a time when you will be tempted to stop. You’ll get discouraged. You’ll doubt yourself. You’ll want to quit. You’ll get busy doing life and your goals fall to the wayside.

But if you are part of an accountability group…

…your goals are at the forefront.

The group members are there to call you out on your excuses. They encourage you to keep moving forward. A little reminder and positive encouragement can go a long way.
#6 The Cheerleader Effect

Many of us turn to our friends and family for answers to our problems. BUT those people can have biases and their own agenda when they give you advice.

Here’s an example. Parents may discourage you from a business opportunity. Why would they do that? Because they are afraid you will lose your money or not be able to make enough to survive. They may fear it will take too much of your time and they won’t get to see you as often. Their lack of encouragement may have an ulterior motive.

Now, I’m not saying they are purposely trying to sabotage your dreams. But, sometimes they do it subconsciously based on their agenda.

When you join an accountability group, the members are there to support you and your goals. If you want to start a business, they will cheer you on in your journey. That’s their agenda.
#7 Comradeship

Don’t underestimate the value of camaraderie. The friendships you create through your accountability group foster your production toward your goals.

The camaraderie in an accountability group nurtures your sense of purpose. As a culture, you’re in it to win it!

PLUS, life is more fun with friends… especially friends that support and root for you to win!

Implementation TIME!

Hopefully, you have a better understanding of how an accountability group can support you.

Accountability is a choice that you make one day at a time!

Great… now what?

Don’t worry… I’ve got you covered.

So… I decided to create a private mentoring accountability group for select individuals. Are you committed to your success? Break through your barriers and reach your goals faster… RIGHT NOW.
